more breaking news from riverdale, maryland. two children are in extreme critical condition after a fire at the apartment building you are looking at right now. this is along the 5400 block of 56th place. brady tells us for the 4 and 5- year-old child they have been rushed to the hospital. we have a crew heading there. we will bring you more information as soon as it is available. now to the search for bombers in last night's terror attacks in indonesia. a pair of suicide bombers posing as guests struck two luxury hotels. one bomb went off in the 18th floor cafe of the jw marriott and the other one at the ritz carlton next door. this video was shot after the

second blast. this is video of the first responders on the scene and we know now that eight people are dead and dozens more injured, including at least eight americans. indonesia's president vows to hunt down those responsible and the u.s. has agreed to help. >> we have to cooperate, not only the u.s. and indonesia but in other countries in the region and around the world and make it difficult for terrorists to do these attacks but unfortunately in democracies these things happen. >> reporter: the same jw marriott was targeted by a bomber six years ago. we spoke to their security chief about how they keep guests safe. lindsey mastis has the story [ sirens ] >> i saw some people start to run. at that time i went down to the lobby and saw where one device had been detonated in the coffee shop of the ritz carlton. i spent some time looking for any victims. >> reporter: he says at the time of the explosion both hotels were at a threat

condition of red. >> which is our highest level of security. >> reporter: that means everyone walking in to the hotel had to go through metal detectors. >> all vehicles have to be inspected, all luggage is inspected with sophisticated explosive vapor detectors. >> reporter: he says not every hotel in jakarta has a high level of security and doesn't know how the explosive devices got in. >> it is like going in to an airport. it is very, very tight security. you don't see this type of security here at hotels in the u.s. >> the threat we see overseas in countries like indonesia, pakistan, saudi arabia, the philippines, it is a much higher threat profile here. >> reporter: and that was lindsey mastis reporting. things are starting to return to normal at a greenbelt apartment complex where three people were shot on thursday. the victims include a u.s. capitol police officer and a 12- year-old rlgi grazed bygi a str bullet from a shootout.

digital correspondent audrey barnes is joining us live from the scene with more. audrey? >> reporter: u.s. capitol police officer eddie thornton junior was coming to this complex to visit his mother when he encountered a man with a gun in the parking lot. they exchanged gunshots and both were hit. so was a 12-year-old girl inside of her apartment. police say the shootout started after a civilian police officer from ft. myer got in to an argument with his roommate. the police officer ran outside to call for help and his roommate grabbed the gun and followed him. that is when off-duty officer thornton exchanged shots with the man. the gun battle rattled the nerves of people living here like johnson who hid on the floor with her girls when she heard the shots. >> always concerned, you know, their safety but especially when something like this happens. >> reporter: in broad daylight. >> yes. >> there is concern however, this community is a really good community to live in and we are glad to be here.

>> reporter: now, that capitol police officer mr. thornton is out of the hospital and he is celebrating his birthday today. the 12-year-old girl is also expected to be okay. the suspect in this case was injured. he's been questioned and police tell me that charges are pending. back to you. >> thank you for that. the kingpin in a centreville heroin ring was sentenced federal court today. 33-year-old an tone know harper of waldorf received nearly 267 years behind bars. >> we're cutting the head off of the stake for this particular ring in this area. he was the main supplier. is there going to be another one in behind him, yes. but i guarantee they will be more cautious. >> greg landis ' daughter died from an overdose of heroin that her boyfriend gave her. he was one of harper's buyers several of whom are recent graduates of west field high school the boyfriend was convicted and will be sentenced

next friday. he's expected to receive more than 20 years behind bars. four other young people have been sentenced to about 20 years each. alicia is one of four young people in northern virginia to die from heroin in the past year. day three of the jacks murder trial is over. she is the southeast mother charged with killing her four daughters. several neighbors took the stand today and they said the sounds of children playing stopped abruptly two years ago. the decaying body of jacks ' daughters were found in her home in january of last year when u.s. marshals delivered an eviction notice. at least one republican senator says he will vote against sonia sotomayor's nomination to the united states supreme court. kentucky senator jim bunning says he has a problem with sonia sotomayor's 2001 speech and her wise latina judge comment. he also says sonia sotomayor shows a "hostility toward gun rights. " the senate will vote before

it recesses in august. despite bunning's opposition, sonia sotomayor is expected to be easily confirmed. a short time ago, president obama was back before reporters talking about the urgent need for health care reform. he says now is not the time to slow down or lose heart in the push to revamp the system. >> if we don't achieve health care reform, we cannot control the costs of medicare and medicaid and we cannot control our long-term debt and our long- term deficits. that's not in dispute. so we're going to have to get this done. >> reporter: the president wants to sign a bill in to law this year that would slow the rate of health care spending and expand health care coverage 0 the millions of people without it. well, could be a rather interesting evening tonight. weather wise. tony is on the terrace with the forecast first. >> we had a severe thunderstorm watch in affect until 4:30 and then it was cancelled and still a chance we could see showers

him when the bear left claw marks and clothes shredded. he believes the bear was trying to get past him to get out of the house. history was made this afternoon when the crew from "endeavor" and the crew from the international space station met in space. it was the first time 13 astronauts were in orbit at one time. thank you for showing up. earlier, shuttle commander mark -- guided the craft through a back flip so that station astronauts could take photographs of its exterior heat shield. shuttle "endeavor" took off on wednesday and the mission is to install a new lab worry. an -- laboratory. an unusually large amount of foam insulation peeled away during liftoff but after inspection nasa has given the shuttle the all clear. >> happy to see people after you have been in space for a listening time. >> come and give me a hug it has ban long time. >> come and talk to me. things have settled down a little bit. not going to give the all clear because there could be a couple

of showers or storms that could be strong but this is not going to be a major event for us as we head through the night time hours. start with the three-day trend and then we will show you the radar in a second. over the weekend, expect the temperatures to get back to where they have been for most of the summer. in the mid-90s yesterday but in the low to mid-80s on saturday and sunday. remarkable stuff for this time of the year. this is the hottest part of the year. middle of july and the first week of august and we are looking at temperatures 83, 84 over the weekend. tonight, mostly cloudy skies. still about a 40% chance of showers and thunderstorms. so even though it is not raining at your house right now for most of you i would take an umbrella if you are going out on this friday night. lows in the 60s. a mixture of clouds and sunshine and a 20 to 30% chance of a shower. no big deal. most of the day will be dry. high temperatures in the low 80s. switch it over and look at live doppler 9000. we can see the strongest stuff is up around baltimore. some pretty strong storms. nasty ones out of maryland in

to delaware right now and there are some warnings associated with those. little scatternd h ait miss storms in our western suburbs for the most part. none of those aare severe obviously. but for our few store storms rumbling around out there. and again a possibility you will run in to a little something. take the umbrella with you even though most areas are dry. switch it over and take a wider view on the radar. some storms upstream out of west virginia and ohio. this is associated with a cold front that will come through here after midnight tonight. so until this front can come through, we will keep a chance of a shower or thunderstorm in the forecast. the initial batch of rain was with this area of low pressure that is traveling in to pennsylvania and the secondary front comes in behind it after midnight. once that goes by things will start to settle down as we head to tomorrow morning. temperatures will cool off a little bit in the 70s with rain showers and 76 degrees downtown. but the cool air is in the this great lakes. the high temperatures in the 60s today in chicago and minneapolis saint paul. this is me middle of july. 62 degrees in the twin cities

right now. not going to get that cool here but that chilly air mass will slide to the south and east. it will keep our temperatures in the low 80s. with the front on the coast, again, i will keep that slight chance of a shower in tomorrow. mostly dry this weekend. another chance of a shower on monday with a high near 85. if you like the hot weather it will come back during the middle of the week. upper 80s to around 90 degrees on tuesday and wednesday. but overall fairly decent weekend is coming up. still a chance of a storm tonight. >> surprises in the forecast. but if you watch the british open and i know you were watching, you can look at his face. i don't need to say anything else. >> yeah. >> it is surprising. >> it is surprising. that's one 0 way to put it. hey, golf fans, don't adjust your set. what we are about to tell you is true. tiger has weekend plans at home in orlando and he doesn't need to change them. and home boy steve marino representing fairfax county to the fullest at the osbeneciy ar

after winning arnold palmer's tournament expers hailed tiger ready for the match. he finished 6th and then a disappointing ninth at the u.s. open after winning jack's event. he would surely make good on the british after winning his own tournament a couple of week ago here. tiger making the entry walk today.
